New versions of the Porsche Cayenne have done away with the low-range gearbox that was found on the original generation, but the platform is still able to deliver the same off-road performance using more advanced electronic traction control systems. The decision to eliminate the heavy low-range gearbox was done to save weight and improve the vehicle’s overall handling profile.
“In the further development of the electronic control systems, we made a big step forward in terms of control quality and speed,” Oliver Laqua said, in a press release. “As a result, we were able to have the same off-road capability as the E1 in the new design of the E2 without a transfer case or a low-range gear, and we could therefore achieve a big weight saving.”
